How to organize YouTube subscriptions into folders
Updated · tested in Chrome
Short answer
YouTube shows every subscription in one chronological feed and has no folders or groups. Turn on “Subscription folders” in ytbud for YouTube: the Subscriptions page gets a row of tabs, one per folder, each with the thumbnail of its latest video as a cover. Click a tab to see only the videos from the channels in it.
Add to Chrome — free for 7 daysWhat YouTube gives you
- Open Subscriptions and scroll one mixed feed, newest first.
- Use Manage to unsubscribe or turn notifications on or off for a channel.
- The only grouping workaround is a playlist per topic, which you fill by hand.
None of this lets you read “just the tech channels” or “just the music channels” in one click.
With ytbud, step by step
- Add ytbud to Chrome and turn on Subscription folders in Tools → Focus.
- Open your Subscriptions page. Next to each channel name there is a small folder button: click it, type a folder name such as Gaming, and press Enter. The channel is now in that folder.
- Click the same button on other channels to add them to a folder, or tick more than one folder.
- Click a folder’s tab above the feed to see only its channels. “All” brings back the full feed.
- Click an open tab again to rename or delete that folder.
Good to know
- Covers
- Each folder tab shows the thumbnail of the first video from its channels, so you can tell folders apart at a glance. It updates when a newer video appears.
- Private and local
- Folders and covers are stored in your browser on this computer. Nothing is sent anywhere, and no ytbud account exists.
- Limits
- A folder shows the videos YouTube has already loaded on the page, so scroll to load more. Up to 30 folders with 500 channels each.
- Undo any time
- Turn the switch off and the Subscriptions page is exactly as YouTube made it. Your folders are kept for next time.
Questions
Does a folder show videos from before I made it?
Yes, for the videos on the page. The folder is a filter over your feed, so older videos appear as you scroll.
Do folders sync to my other computers?
No. They stay in the browser where you made them.
Does it work for channels I am not subscribed to?
Folders only filter the Subscriptions feed, which lists channels you follow.
