How to skip sponsor segments on YouTube automatically
Updated · tested in Chrome
Short answer
Turn on “Skip sponsor segments” in ytbud for YouTube. It uses timestamps marked by the SponsorBlock community to jump over sponsor reads, self-promotion and “like and subscribe” reminders. A toast says “Skipped sponsor” with an Undo button, and the segments are marked on the progress bar.
Add to Chrome — it’s freeWhat YouTube offers
Nothing for sponsor reads. They’re part of the video, not ads, so YouTube Premium doesn’t remove them either. You can drag the playhead past them by hand.
With ytbud, step by step
- Add ytbud to Chrome.
- Open Tools → Ads and segments and turn on Skip sponsor segments.
- Chrome asks once to allow sponsor.ajay.app, SponsorBlock’s server. Allow it.
- Play a video. Marked segments show on the progress bar and skip as you reach them. Press Undo on the toast to watch one.
Good to know
- Private by design
- ytbud sends only the first 4 characters of a hash of the video ID, then picks the right video from the answer. SponsorBlock can’t tell which video you’re watching.
- Skips ads, too
- “Autoskip ads” presses Skip the moment a skippable ad allows it. It only clicks; it doesn’t block anything.
Questions
Is SponsorBlock data free to use?
Yes, it’s a community database under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0. ytbud credits SponsorBlock under the switch.
What if a video has no segments?
Nothing happens. Coverage is best on popular channels, where the community has marked more videos.
