How to get the transcript of a YouTube video
Updated · tested in Chrome
Short answer
On YouTube, open the description (…more) and click “Show transcript”. To search it, follow along, or download it, use the Transcript button from ytbud for YouTube: the active line follows playback, a click seeks, and you can save .txt, .srt or .md files or copy everything.
Add to Chrome — it’s freeYouTube’s own transcript
- Under the video, click …more to expand the description.
- Scroll to the end and click Show transcript.
- The transcript opens in the side panel. Select text by hand to copy it.
There’s no download button, and copying by hand picks up timestamps line by line.
With ytbud, step by step
- Add ytbud to Chrome. The Transcript button is on by default.
- Click Transcript under the player. The full text opens in a side panel.
- Type in the search box to highlight matches. Click any line to jump to it.
- Download as .txt, .srt subtitles, or .md with a link to every moment. Or copy it all.
Good to know
- Notes with links
- “Timestamp notes” saves your own notes at a moment and exports them as Markdown with youtu.be links.
- Any video with captions
- Uploaded or automatic captions both work. Videos with no captions have no transcript to show.
Questions
Can I get a transcript if the video has no captions?
Not from YouTube: the transcript is built from captions. If there are none, there’s nothing to read.
Is the transcript download free?
Yes. ytbud is free and has no account or limits.
